What Is the Best Fabric for Medical Scrubs?

Short answer

The best medical scrubs fabric balances three things: comfort through a long shift, durability through hundreds of hospital washes, and easy care. For most uniform programs, a polyester-rich woven with some rayon for softness and a few percent spandex for stretch hits that balance better than cotton or plain polyester. Our scrubs range is built this way in three versions, all at 200 GSM: FX50316 medical scrubs fabric for everyday scrubs, FX56470 hospital uniform fabric for hospital uniform programs, and FX55527 moisture-wicking scrubs fabric for hot wards and long shifts. All three stretch, resist wrinkles and are piece dyed.

What a Good Medical Scrubs Fabric Needs to Do

Scrubs work harder than most uniforms. They are worn for long shifts, bent and stretched all day, and washed again and again, often at high temperatures. A fabric that feels good on the hanger but fades, pills or loses shape after a month will cost a hospital or a uniform brand far more than it saves. These are the four jobs the fabric has to do.

1

Stay comfortable for a full shift

Soft hand feel, a light weight and some stretch let nurses and technicians bend, reach and move without the fabric pulling.

2

Survive repeated laundering

Strong fibers and stable dyeing keep the garment from thinning, shrinking or fading after frequent hot washes.

3

Look neat with little care

Wrinkle resistance means staff walk out of the laundry and onto the ward without ironing.

4

Match the same color every time

Hospitals assign colors by department. Reorders have to match the first order, shade for shade.

Scrubs Fabric Blends Compared

Most scrubs on the market fall into four fabric groups. The table shows how they generally compare, so you can see why polyester-rayon-spandex has become a common choice for uniform programs.

General tendencies only. Weave, weight and finishing change real-world results.
Blend Hand feel Durability in repeat washing Wrinkle behavior Typical role
Polyester, rayon and spandex Soft, smooth drape Strong Low wrinkling Everyday scrubs with stretch
Cotton and polyester Familiar, breathable Good Moderate wrinkling Budget-conscious uniforms
Polyester with spandex Slick, light Very strong Low wrinkling Performance-style scrubs
Cotton or cotton-rich Soft, natural Moderate, tends to shrink Wrinkles easily Light-duty, comfort first

No single row wins every category. The polyester-rayon-spandex blend gets closest to covering all four jobs from the section above, which is why we developed our scrubs fabrics around it.

Why Polyester, Rayon and Spandex Work Together

Each fiber in the blend has a clear job, and the ratio decides how the fabric behaves. Here is the split in our three scrubs builds:

FX50316: 75% polyester, 20% rayon, 5% spandex FX56470: 75% polyester, 19% rayon, 6% spandex FX55527: 38% polyester, 37% wicking fiber, 19% rayon, 6% spandex Polyester Rayon Spandex Wicking fiber
Polyester

The backbone. It gives strength, quick drying and wrinkle resistance, and it holds color well through frequent washing.

Rayon

The comfort layer. It adds a soft hand feel and a smooth drape that plain polyester lacks, and it takes the stiffness out of the fabric.

Spandex

The stretch. A 5% to 6% share is enough to let the fabric move with the wearer and recover, without making it feel rubbery.

Wicking fiber

The cooling layer, used in FX55527. It helps move sweat and moisture away from the skin, so the fabric feels drier during extended wear.

Weight matters as much as composition. At 200 GSM, our scrubs fabrics are light enough to stay comfortable on a busy ward and still have the body to hold a clean line in a top or trouser.

Our Scrubs Fabric Range: Three Builds Compared

All three fabrics share the same weight, width and dyeing method, so the choice comes down to the job. The table sets out the specifications as listed on each product page.

Medical scrubs fabric: the everyday build

This is where most scrubs programs start. It is soft, light and stretchy, with water-resistant and antibacterial finishes, and we can match it to hospital standard Pantone colors so each department's color stays consistent. Logos, labels, packaging, sizes and patterns can be customized.

Hospital uniform fabric: built for long-wear programs

FX56470 has a slightly higher spandex share, which gives it a little more stretch for garments worn for long periods. It is designed for hospital uniforms and other workwear, and customized hospital standard colors are available. It suits hospital procurement departments and healthcare apparel brands ordering in bulk.

Moisture-wicking scrubs fabric: for hot wards and long shifts

FX55527 replaces part of the polyester with moisture-wicking fiber, 37% of the blend. That helps move sweat away from the skin, so the fabric feels drier through extended wear. It is the one to look at if your staff work in warm environments or run long, active shifts.

Moisture-Wicking Scrubs Fabric FX55527Moisture-Wicking Scrubs FabricA 38% polyester, 37% COOLMAX, 19% rayon, 6% spandex blend that moves sweat away from the skin, with stretch, antibacterial and wrinkle-resistant properties for extended wear.View Product

Water-Resistant and Antibacterial Finishes: What to Ask For

Finishes and fiber treatments are where scrubs fabrics differ most. A water-resistant finish, listed on FX50316 and FX56470, helps the fabric shed light splashes instead of absorbing them straight away. An antibacterial property, listed on all three, is there to limit odor-causing bacteria on the fabric. FX55527 adds moisture-wicking, which moves sweat away from the skin.

None of these should be assumed to last forever, so a buyer should ask a few direct questions before approving bulk.

  • How does the finish hold up after washing? Ask for wash-test data at the number of washes your program expects.
  • Does it change the hand feel? Check a finished swatch, not only an untreated sample.
  • Is it a light-duty or a heavy-duty finish? A water-resistant finish suits everyday splash protection. Do not treat it as a substitute for specialized protective clothing.

We are happy to talk through finish performance for your wash conditions, and a swatch is the best way to see the result for yourself.

Customization for Hospital and Uniform Brand Programs

Hospital buyers and medical uniform brands rarely want an off-the-shelf fabric in an off-the-shelf color. We weave in-house, which lets us adjust the fabric to the program instead of the other way round.

Color matching

We can match hospital standard colors on our medical scrubs and hospital uniform fabrics, including Pantone references. Piece dyeing lets you order the color you need for each department.

Branding and packaging

Logos, labels and packaging can be customized to your brand or your hospital's requirements.

Sizes and patterns

Sizes and patterns can be tailored to your garment program, from plain solids to more distinctive uniform looks.

Bulk supply

Supply is set up for hospitals, medical institutions and uniform brands that need consistent bulk volumes and repeat orders.

For the moisture-wicking build, contact us about color options before you plan your range.

What to Verify Before You Order Scrubs Fabric in Bulk

Scrubs fabric orders are large, and mistakes are expensive to fix once the roll is cut. Check these five points on any supplier, including us, before you confirm.

  1. Composition and weight on a real swatch. Confirm the blend and GSM on the physical sample, and weigh it yourself if you can.
  2. Shrinkage and color fastness after industrial washing. Ask for results that reflect how the garments will really be laundered.
  3. Stretch and recovery. Pull the fabric in both directions and check that it returns to shape, especially at the knee and seat.
  4. Finish durability. Ask how the water-resistant, antibacterial and moisture-wicking properties perform after repeated washes.
  5. Shade approval before bulk. Approve a lab dip against your Pantone reference, and confirm that bulk will match it.

Also check that the minimum order fits your plan. For all three of our scrubs fabrics it is 1500 meters per color and 5000 meters per order, with a lead time of 25 to 30 days.

How to Start a Scrubs Fabric Order With Us

You do not need a finished spec to start a conversation. A reference garment, a color chip or a rough description of the hospital or brand program is enough for us to recommend a fabric and prepare samples.

What you send us

  • Garment type, such as tops, trousers or suits
  • Target colors or Pantone references
  • Expected volume per color and per order
  • Any finish, label or packaging requirements

What we handle

  • Fabric recommendation based on your garment
  • Swatches and lab dips for your approval
  • Color matching to your hospital or brand standard
  • Bulk production and delivery planning

If one of the three is close to what you need, send us the product code and any changes you have in mind, and we will quote from there. The full details are on the product pages for medical scrubs fabric, hospital uniform fabric and moisture-wicking scrubs fabric.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Scrubs Fabric

What fabric is best for medical scrubs?

A polyester-rich blend with rayon and a small share of spandex is a popular choice. It is soft enough for long shifts, strong enough for frequent washing, and it resists wrinkles. Pure cotton is comfortable but wrinkles and shrinks more.

Is polyester rayon spandex good for scrubs?

Yes. Polyester gives strength and easy care, rayon gives softness and drape, and spandex gives stretch. Together they cover comfort, durability and appearance in one fabric.

Which should I choose: FX50316, FX56470 or FX55527?

Start with FX50316 for general everyday scrubs. Choose FX56470 for hospital uniform programs that need customized hospital standard colors and a little more stretch. Choose FX55527 if your staff work in warm environments and need the fabric to move sweat away from the skin.

How heavy should scrubs fabric be?

It depends on the climate and the role. A lightweight fabric such as our 200 GSM range suits busy wards and warmer environments, while heavier weights give more body but run warmer. Ask for a swatch so you can judge the weight by hand.

What does a water-resistant finish do on scrubs fabric?

It helps the fabric shed light splashes instead of absorbing them immediately. It does not make the garment waterproof or replace specialized protective clothing, and its performance can change with repeated washing.

Is moisture-wicking scrubs fabric worth choosing?

It is worth it when staff work in warm environments or do physically active shifts, because the fabric moves sweat away from the skin and feels drier. For milder conditions, an everyday blend is often enough. A swatch comparison is the easiest way to decide.

Can the fabric be matched to my hospital's standard colors?

Yes, on our medical scrubs fabric and hospital uniform fabric. We usually send a lab dip for approval before bulk production so the shade is confirmed in advance. For the moisture-wicking fabric, contact us to discuss color options.

What are the minimum order and lead time for these fabrics?

For all three, the minimum order is 1500 meters per color and 5000 meters per order, and the lead time is 25 to 30 days. If your volume is different, contact us and we will discuss what is possible.
